Economic Stress, Poverty and Hunger, in Georgia

  • At 14.2%, Georgia has the 4th highest “Food Insecurity” rate in the US.
  • One in five Georgia children live in poverty
  • Seven percent of Cherokee County residents live in poverty (almost 16,000 residents).
  • Almost 6,000 Cherokee County residents live in dire poverty (at least 50% below the poverty level).
  • The Cherokee County unemployment rate is 8.9%.
  • There are more than 2,000 fewer Cherokee County workers employed in July 2010, as late 2009.
  • Even in the current economy, with record high home foreclosure rates, the number of Atlanta Metro Area foreclosures increased 59% from June to July 2010.
